A huge selection of hotels are located in Madrid city centre, a mere 15 km / 9 miles south-west of Barajas International Airport (MAD). Rivalling the best accommodation in any European location, lodging in Madrid tends to be fairly functional, although many hotels have been upgraded in recent years.
At the budget end of the market, cheap rooms are available at a number of small hotels, particularly around the Atoches train station. These are ideal for those planning an extended stay, although facilities can be fairly basic. Those looking to stay close to the action should consider accommodation around the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza de Santa Ana and the Puerta del Sol, where quality hotels are in good supply, together with restaurants, Tapas bars and lively nightclubs. Further lodging can be found in a number of quieter areas in Madrid, such as the Salamanca and Recoletos areas.
