Madrid: City Hotels and Accommodation
A huge selection of hotels are located in Madrid city centre, a mere 15 km / 9 miles south-west of Barajas International Airport (MAD). Rivalling the best accommodation in any European location, lodging in Madrid tends to be fairly functional, although many hotels have been upgraded in recent years.
At the budget end of the market, cheap rooms are available at a number of small hotels, particularly around the Atoches train station. These are ideal for those planning an extended stay, although facilities can be fairly basic. Many of the top luxury hotels in Madrid serve business travellers during the week and offer special weekend discounts to tempt tourists. Most travel agents in the city operate a voucher scheme, known as 'talones de hoteles', which is a good way to get the best rates, although not all hotels participate.
Accommodation finding services are available at Madrid Barajas International Airport, the city's Atocha and Chamartín train stations, and Estacion Sur de Autobuses bus station. This is a useful service and not only applies to Madrid, but the whole of Spain, although there is a small booking charge.
Those looking to stay close to the action should consider accommodation around the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza de Santa Ana and the Puerta del Sol, where quality hotels are in good supply, together with restaurants, Tapas bars and lively nightclubs. Further lodging can be found in a number of quieter areas in Madrid, such as the Salamanca and Recoletos areas.
